Values

Goals

To create a more equitable world for all people.

To provide scientific evidence that will improve access to legal, educational, and public health resources for marginalized populations.

  • Equity: Our work and our personal behaviors center on advancing social equity.

  • Courage: We take on difficult subjects and execute top quality research that adds to our understanding of social inequality, that advances a more equitable society, and that weeds out forms of systemic and institutional bias.

  • Integrity: We create research that builds confidence in the results; we act in our personal lives in ways that reflect our mission.

  • Communication: The results of our research are communicated to the public through traditional scientific channels, white papers, and speaking engagements. We are committed to a broad communication reach.

  • Ownership: The lab runs with its own equality principles, including joint ownership of all projects. No one individual owns what we do; we all contribute to the success of the research and commit ourselves to that success.

  • Accountability: Our science is transparent. We are held accountable by one another, the College, and those who are consumers of our work. We are transparent in all aspects of our work.

  • Growth + Development: As faculty overseeing the research in the lab, we all commit to the growth and development of student researchers working with us. The lab experience is a critical component of students’ experiential learning, and it is the responsibility of all lab faculty to ensure the proper growth and development of student research skills and ability to act with integrity.

  • We will assess all potential projects for their fit with the RISEUP mission and select only those whose questions and/or outcomes advance social equity.

  • Topics advancing social equity that may present challenges due to their sensitive nature will not be set aside because they are sensitive. Their importance may be read as more critical for that sensitivity.

  • All research conducted by lab members will be subject to internal peer review. All research will be conducted by groups under the direction of at least one faculty member and without the opportunity for group think.

  • Periodic review of lab members will occur to ensure the highest integrity of behavior both inside and outside the lab.

  • All project progress and results will be readily shared when asked. Results will be submitted for publication as appropriate. When expedience is deemed of high value, results will be summarized in abstract or white paper form and published on this website.

  • Quarterly reviews will ensure the transparency and accountability of the lab’s work.

  • Syllabi with specific outcomes will measure faculty success in helping students research grow their research and equity skills.
